Assessing a Franchise Opportunity

You have an interest in running a franchise, but you are still unsure if it is the right solution for you.  You know you want to run your own business, and sure, it sounds nice to have the business plan, system, and marketing in place.  However, there are many things you should consider regarding a franchise opportunity.  You have to really feel as though you are making the right choice based on intelligent gathering of information.  This article is designed to get you to look at a franchise opportunity for the pros and cons.  It will also explain certain things you should look for.

To begin you need to know what the business is and how it operates.  You cannot just accept the first deal that falls in your lap.  In fact if the opportunity is handed to you, you still have a lot of research you have to do.  Ask what the location of the franchise opportunity is.  After all, just because the person is scouting in your area doesn’t mean they are looking to open up a business right around the corner.  It could be that they are looking for anyone willing to get into a franchise, but it is actually three hundred miles from where you live.

The success of a franchise is dependent on a lot of things.  You have to decide if the number of franchises in the United Kingdom, the length of time they have been in business, and how financially successful they are mesh.  The franchise opportunity you find may be successful in two out of the three things.  If you find that the business is fairly new to franchising you have to look at whether that works for you.  Often a newer franchise is not as well established and it could backfire on you.

Do your research.  Always look at the competition.  Is there a high amount of competition in your area? Does the other company have more strength than the franchise opportunity you are considering?  Look on the local and national level at the competition as this gains you more insight into the franchise.  Also do market research.  The franchisor has done their market research, but is your research telling you something different?  Analyse the information offered to you for validity.

The initial and ongoing costs of the franchise will need to be determined.  This is where you decide if you can really afford the opportunity being given to you.  You may find that it is not cost effective.  The training and support offered by the franchisor is also highly important.  If you are opening the business you want to know that the company is going to back you up.  You do not want to start without having input on how to make the company successful.

In any franchise agreement there are conditions and restrictions.  You have to examine the restrictions to see if they will work for you.  Also examine how long the agreement will last and if a renewal option is offered.
